Steps to prevent mold allergy
1) Take the damp out
The rule of thumb is to remove all wet stuff in your home. Mold is present in carpet, pillow, furniture, and clothing. It just needs a trickle of wetness to start contaminating. No wet things can survive from the mold if they are saturated for more than two days.
Sometimes you need to track for mold. They can grow within the walls or behind the wallpaper where you cannot see it. It also exists in the basement or cellar, common damp areas in your house. However, mold leaves dark tints on the surface or moldy odors. Look for these signs!
2) Set up moisture
Make sure the humidity in the air is under control. An ideal amount of moisture should be from 35% to 50%. If the humidity is higher, mold will multiply rapidly.
You can buy a meter to measure the moisture. Or you may bring home a dehumidifier for better benefits, especially in damp areas like the basement.
3) Fix the leaks
Mold is an immediate consequence of water intrusion. It can move around the home structure through plumbing system and invade every area of the house. Check the whole household plumbing carefully. Leaking may take place on the walls, roof, or floor. You need a thorough check to find mold haven, then fix them right away. Mold just needs 48 hours to get stirred up.
4) Protect yourself
When you do gardening or vacuum-cleaning, you should wear a mask. The ordinary mask is not enough to protect you from inhaling mold spores. Choose the mask which has been tested. It protects your lungs from the airborne mold and avoids triggering allergy symptoms.
Pick good gloves made of plastic to protect your hands. A disposable one is a big plus as it is time-saving and more hygienic.
Grasp full-seal, well-fitted glasses. Your eyes may get itchy when contacting with mold.
5) Clean up carefully
To prevent mold allergy, regular and thorough cleanup is the key principle. Wash clothing, clothes, little stuffed things regularly in hot water (more than 130 degrees F) to remove fungus spores.
Throw away unwashed too-old cloth items. It is also a good idea to keep stuffed toys out of the bedroom.
With hard things, wipe the surface with bleach (cup of bleach per gallon of water) then leave them until they are completely dry.

6) Isolate affected areas
As mold increases quickly, isolating mold-intruding areas is important to avoid spore dispersion. Act immediately to protect people, especially those with allergy. If mold attack is not serious, you just need to dry the place to avoid contamination.
For a large mold outbreak, shut the doors, minimize the air circulation from affected area to the rest of the place. Then seek for help from a mold-expert right away. If you hesitate, you may have to pay a fortune for repairing mold damage.
7) Kick mold outside
Mold germinates when the weather is warm and the moisture is high. The tiny spores sneak into your house in dust, stains on clothes and shoes. If you are a big fan of gardening, change your clothes and leave gloves, boots outside. Take a shower before you come indoors.
Catch up with daily mold count. Over peak period, shut the windows and turn on an air conditioner or air purifier. Choose a pleasant day to go out if you are allergic to mold. Also, do not stay long in a contaminated area.
It is always better to take precautions than look for treatment. By not providing mold suitable environment, you will live a healthier and more comfortable life.
