Humidity, Mold and Indoor Garden

Indoor gardening is the method where you grow the plants inside the room with the same conditions created artificially and having the natural outcome. For plants, the most important thing to grow healthily is light and water but different conditions of air also matters. The temperature, humidity etc. are very important for the growth of the plants. In indoor gardening, as we force the plants to grow under artificial conditions, it is very important that we create the perfect ambience. Any small changes will lead to severe damage of the plants and unsuccessful project.

The main parameters that play major roles in indoor gardening is humidity, mold and air quality. Excessive humidity will damage the growth of the plant on the other hand, dry air is not very healthy for their growth. You have to condition it properly. In case of molds, they grow in high humidity and in the absence of direct sunlight. They cover the soil because it remains dump most of the time and eventually affect the plants. The absence of proper air quality will also trouble.

Here we will discuss about the perfect conditions where you can get the optimum results.

Humidity is the parameter that expresses the amount of water present in the air. The amount varies with the temperature of the air and the warmer the air, the greater the power of holding water in it. The average indoor plants survive in 40-60% humidity but due to many reason the humidity falls. When it happens the growth of the plants get hampered so we need to higher the humidity. There are various process to do that. We will discuss the successive steps that will help us to keep the humidity in accurate level.

Things required for this:

  • Tray made of plastic or glass.
  • Pebbles or marbles.
  • Warm or cool mist humidifier.
  • Large aquarium or small greenhouse.

First you need to place the tray at the right place in your room. The most appropriate position will be tat middle of the indoor garden. After placing the tray in the middle you need to fill it with pebbles or marbles that you have with you. This is the basic set up you need. Now start filling the tray with water. Keep pouring the water until it reaches the surface of the pebbles.

Pebble tray

Now in the next step, you need to place the potted plant on the pebbles. This will keep the plant closer to the tray which is important in this case. Keep an eye on the water level and keep filling the tray as the water evaporates. The evaporated water is helping to increasing the humidity because the air contains this water in its particles.

The more water evaporates, the greater the humidity, so keep grouping plants near the tray. Make a round and keep the tray in the middle or simply place that potted plants on them. They will absorb more water and that will have positive aspects on them.

Now place the humidifier near the indoor garden or the potted plants. Humidifier adds moisture to the air. Depending on type of humidifier, it works differently; it adds cool moisture when we use cool humidifier. There are several plants the demand cool moisture and if your garden has those you should always go for cool humidifier. Warm humidifier on the other hand leaves hot moistures and that helps the plants that grows better in that atmosphere.

It would be wise to keep the indoor garden in side something similar to greenhouse. Any enclosed area would be better choice for it as that kind of enclosure helps to keep the humidity consistent which is best for the plants.

When following this method you need to keep the tray clean or you will face mold problem and you need to clean the humidifier as well for the same reason. Besides, you need to keep the records of the humidity with the help of a hygrometer. That will give you a clear view about the humidity change.

Molds are another problem you need to deal with. They are mostly grown on the soil and creates a layer a because of which the soil don’t get enough oxygen or light and the plants suffer. The main problem with molds are that they grow in greater humidity. So when you have indoor garden you need to keep it under control. There are some basic things that you should keep an eye on to eliminate the mold problem.

Keep your surrounding clean and dry. Make sure there is not much humid ambience. If the humidity is low, then you can easily handle the molds. Use dehumidifier to control the humidity and that will automatically reduce the mold problem. Eliminating the mold would enhance the growth of the plants.

Indoor air

Air quality is another factor for the indoor gardens. There are various reasons for which the indoor air gets polluted and the growth of the plants gets hampered. The computers and other gadgets that has radiation issues are main sources of indoor air pollutants. Apart from them there are molds, tobacco smoke, pesticides to pollute the sir. There are natural air purifier that clears the air and keeps a healthier atmosphere for the indoor garden plants. Aloe Vera, eucalyptus, peace lily, English ivy, Boston fern etc. plants have been proven to clear the air effectively.

These are the basic problems you will face while dealing with indoor garden and most of the times, the best hydroponic system is also affected by these. Take the proper precautions and let the plants flourish in natural way.
